Tom grace and myself decided it would be a nice idea to make a very special photo book for Jos birthday. we have booked eyebox on the 31st. they want to have photos with all the things they love doing. So are taking their martial arts gear, graces Violin and toms scooter.
I am trying to get a few different ideas for the shots from various places on the web.
But the lighting is a bit scarey as I have not set up the studio on my own. I have watched it done.
how should I start ?

Shame you're doing that on the 31st as I'm on a martial arts seminar that day, otherwise I'd've offered to come & help you with the lighting!

Re: Kids in the studio
Start with a single light, 45º front/side/up. I'd go with a big octa for starters..
Camera on ISO 100, 125th, F8 as a starting point. Take a test shot for the ambient light (it'll probably be quite dark at that point).
Then switch on the flash trigger and take a test shot with flash.
Remember, changing ISO or aperture will affect the overall exposure, changing the flash power or position will predominantly affect the bit lit by the flash. You need to keep the shutter speed below the sync speed of the camera, so generally < 1/200th ish.

Any thoughts on lighting styles you'd like to try for this Phil?
